Courses completed at another university MUST be pre-approved by SOUSA to be considered for transfer credit.
- Studies that were not pre-approved will be refused for transfer credit.
- Only SOUSA has the authority to pre-approve courses (approval by a department or program advisor outside of SOUSA should be considered as a recommendation only).
- SOUSA reserves the right to refuse transfer credit if the host institution or any of its courses fails to meet your program or degree requirements or the Faculty's academic standards or study away policies.

Review the steps below for instructions on transferring credit towards your B.Sc. or B.A. & Sc. degree for courses satisfactorily completed during an approved study away.
- Review institutional and academic requirements
- Submit a course equivalency request
- Report your courses on the Transfer Credit Assessment Form
- Submit an official transcript from your host institution
- View your transfer credits and exemptions on your unofficial Minerva transcript
听
NOTE: For University courses completed before you began your 成人大片 studies (i.e. pre-成人大片), please refer to the Pre-成人大片 University Transfer Credit page.
1. Review institutional and academic requirements
- Institutional requirements
- Course requirements
- Grade & credit load requirements
- Additional requirement for Language and Civilization courses
Institutional requirements
Transfer credits can only be accepted from institutions that:
- Are accredited by a college board, or a degree granting institution. Requests to study away via intermediary study abroad organizations or companies will not be approved.
- Offer a three or four year bachelor's degree or equivalent which is similar to a 成人大片 B.Sc. or B.A. & Sc..
NOTE: Institutions such as Community Colleges, which offer two-year associate degrees, are acceptable for transfer credits ONLY if courses were completed pre-成人大片. Once admitted to 成人大片, all courses MUST be taken at university-level institutions to be eligible for transfer credit.
听
Course requirements:
- Course must be delivered on-campus (i.e. in person) and be part of the host university鈥檚 undergraduate curriculum. See Online education policy for information regarding online courses.
- Course must count for credit toward a degree at the host institution. Courses taken toward a certificate/diploma or courses taken through continuing studies will typically NOT be credited unless they count toward an undergraduate degree at that institution.
- Course must have a syllabus that includes, at a minimum, contact hours, course objectives, readings, mode of delivery, and method of evaluation.
- Course must not overlap in content with a course for which credit has already been granted. (See Course load and restrictions)
- Course may not exceed the maximum of credits that can be taken outside the Faculty of Arts or Science. (See Courses load and restrictions)
- ALL components of the method of evaluation of each course must be completed by the end of the term of study at the host university.
- Course must generate a final grade that can be recorded on the host university鈥檚 official transcript.
NOTE: Students must verify that they have the required prerequisite for any course they intend to take at the host university. Students should not take a course at the host university if they do not have the required academic background to succeed in the course.
Courses that are NOT accepted for transfer credit toward your degree are:
- Courses applied only toward certificates and/or diploma programs at the host institution (including Continuing Education courses).
- Language courses offered by Language Centers or Institutes not associated with a degree granting institution.
- Practicum ("How to") courses: e.g., dance, fashion designing, journalism, orientation, photography, fine arts, sports, web designing, culinary courses, etc.
- Skills-improvement courses such as 鈥渁rt workshop鈥, 鈥渃ivilization鈥, and 鈥渕ethodology鈥 (鈥淲elcome Program鈥).
- Volunteer programs.
- Graduate level courses.
- Independent Research or Reading courses.
- Internship courses.
听
Grade requirements
- Courses must receive final grades and be passed with a grade of "C", or better, at the host university.
- Grades of C-, Pass (P) and Satisfactory (S) will not be accepted for transfer credits.
- The letter grades achieved at the host university will take precedence over the corresponding numerical grades if both are provided. If the host university does not use a letter grade system, you must consult with the mary.gauthier [at] mcgill.ca (Mary Gauthier) to confirm the minimum grade required for transfer credits.
Credit load limit
Fall or Winter term | Maximum of 15 transfer credits is normally granted |
Full academic year | Maximum of 30 transfer credits is normally granted |
Summer term |
Inter-University Transfer (Quebec): Maximum of 12 transfer credits is normally granted Independent Study Away: Maximum of 3-4 credits (1 course) will be granted |
It is the host university's full course load for degree students that will determine the calculation of your transfer credits. If you complete less than the equivalent of a full course load, transfer credits will be pro-rated.
Additional requirements for Language and Civilization courses:
- Pre- and Post- Interviews or Placement Tests: You must consult the appropriate language department(s) before leaving for your study away to determine if a pre-interview or a pre-placement test is required. A pre-interview or pre-placement test is normally waived if you have previously taken a 成人大片 course in the same language. Where appropriate, you must arrange to take a post-interview or post-placement test immediately upon returning to 成人大片. When you go to the post-interview or post-placement test, take detailed course information, including the method of evaluation, a copy of your host university transcript and an up-to-date copy of your Minerva academic record.
- Courses taken at language centres are normally not permitted. However, if you obtain written approval from the appropriate Department Chair on the 'Transfer credit assessment form', this will be taken into consideration when assessing your record for transfer credits.
- A language course which is not offered at 成人大片 is normally assessed by SOUSA as generic language transfer credits using course code 'TRNS LANG'.

2. Submit a course equivalency request
The Course Equivalency System (CES) helps you check which courses from other institutions have been approved for transfer credit and equivalency at 成人大片. You can also use it to submit requests for new courses to be assessed.
- If a course is listed as approved, the system will show the 成人大片 equivalent course.
- You may submit more courses than you plan to take, especially if you are unsure which ones will be available for registration.
- Having a course approved in the CES does not mean you are approved to study away鈥攖hat is a separate process.听
- Having a course approved in the CES does guarantee that you may take it for credit鈥攖he course must still meet your degree and/or program requirements, as determined by SOUSA (for example: if the course overlaps with one you have already completed, SOUSA will not approve you to take it for credit).
- If you are going on Exchange or Independent Study Away (Fall and/or Winter), you must have your study away approved BEFORE submitting courses in the CES.
- If you are going on Independent Study Away (Summer) or Inter-University Transfer, you must have your courses approved in the CES as PART OF the application and approval process.
听
How to use the CES:
1) Search the database to determine if the course you want to take has already been approved. You will need to search for any and all courses you are considering taking while on study away.
- You may want to use the 鈥淓xternal鈥 course number and then 鈥淐ountry鈥 or 鈥淚nstitution鈥 to determine if the course has already been approved.听
- Make sure you also select 鈥淚nclude Expired Decisions鈥. The course may have already been approved, but might be expired, which means you will have to "Request Reassessment.鈥
- Note that the CES is a 成人大片 resource and does not reflect the full range of course offerings at host institutions.
2) If the course(s) you are considering taking while on study away are already listed as approved in the Course Equivalency System, go to Step 3: List your courses in the Transfer Credit Assessment Form.
3) If the course is not on the course database or is expired, then you must 鈥淪ubmit a new Request鈥 or "Request Reassessment" and follow the on screen instructions. You will need a detailed syllabus to submit your request. For detailed instructions on using the system, please see the FAQ.
3) Report your courses on the Transfer Credit Assessment Form
The Transfer Credit Assessment Form (TCAF) is the next step after getting your courses approved in the Course Equivalency System (CES). While the CES determines if 成人大片 accepts a course and what its equivalent is, the TCAF determines if you can count that course toward your degree.
- SOUSA reviews the TCAF to assess whether the courses you selected fit within your degree requirements.
- For example, if you鈥檝e already received credit for a course that overlaps with one on your TCAF, that course 飞辞苍鈥檛 be approved for you, even though it was approved in the CES.
- If you are applying for Independent Study Away in Summer or Inter-University Transfer, you must submit the TCAF as part of your application. Your ISA or IUT will not be approved unless SOUSA confirms that the courses you plan to take are appropriate for your degree.
听
How to use the TCAF:
1) To access the form you must already have an active study away (Exchange, ISA, IUT) application:
- Login to Minerva (Student Menu > Student Records Menu > Exchange/Study Away Menu > View Application Status > Click on the Details).
- At the bottom of your application, click on Course Approval and Transfer Credit Form.
2) Enter your courses. Refer to the on Minerva for instructions. Note: only courses that have already been approved in the CES can be reported on your TCAF.
3) Note that SOUSA may request a copy of the course syllabus or other course material as part of the TCAF review process - even if the course was pre-approved in the CES. It is your responsibility to obtain and retain copies of all course material and documentation received while on study away.
Departmental staff (academics and advisors) in Arts, Science and in other faculties at 成人大片 will evaluate courses (based on content, level and method of evaluation) for approval and make recommendations for transfer credit assessment. However, SOUSA has responsibility for assessing the mode of delivery and has final authority over the granting transfer credits and the number of transfer credits given for B.Sc. and B.A. & Sc. students.
4) Submit an official transcript from the host institution
An official transcript of completed studies (including course numbers and individual final grades 鈥 not pass/fail) must be provided to 成人大片鈥檚 Enrolment Services by the deadlines indicated below in order to process your transfer credit. A provisional transcript or a certificate indicating only the completion of studies will not be accepted.
NOTE: See Additional requirements for Language and Civilization courses for additional documentation needed to receive credit for these types of courses.
成人大片 accepts electronic final official transcripts sent through a recognized digital credential service provider or directly from the issuing institution(s).
Recognized digital credential service providers include (but are not limited to):
鈥 Parchment
鈥 Credentials Solutions
鈥 Bureau du cooperation interuniversitaire (BCI)
鈥 National Student Clearinghouse
鈥 Digitary
鈥 My eQuals
鈥 eScrip-safe
If it is not possible for documents to be sent via one of the service providers listed above, 成人大片 will accept final official transcripts sent directly from the issuing institution to听officialschooldocs [at] mcgill.ca. Documents that are not required or that are determined to be unofficial will not be accepted.

5) View your transfer credits and exemptions on your unofficial Minerva transcript
- Transfer credits are processed and recorded on your unofficial Minerva transcript according to the following guidelines and regulations:
- Course exemptions and transfer credits are indicated for the term(s) in which they were taken.听Courses that do not have direct 成人大片 course equivalencies are indicated using generic or specific subject codes: e.g. BIOL 3XX (for a Biology course at the 300 level), TRNS HUMN (for a course in a Humanities subject), or TRNS LANG (for a language course not taught at 成人大片).听
- Courses given the following transfer credit codes can be used only as electives for your 成人大片 Science or B.A. & Sc. degree: SUBJ 1XX; e.g. BIOL 1XX (for a course considered as "general" Biology course), TRNS GNST (General Studies), TRNS HUMN (Humanities), TRNS LANG (Language), TRNS MASC (Math and Sciences) or TRNS SOSC (Social Sciences).
- The number of credits transferred will reflect the number of credits completed at the host university, and may differ slightly from the credit weight for the equivalent 成人大片 course, where such an equivalent course exists. Students are advised to verify their record and meet with their departmental adviser once the transfer credits are added to the Minerva transcript.
- The host university's full course load for degree students will determine the calculation of 成人大片 transfer credits. If the host university has a different full course load for International students, SOUSA will use this requirement to calculate the number of transfer credits you will receive.
- The host university's full-year course load is equivalent to 30 成人大片 credits; their term (Fall or Winter) course load is 15 成人大片 credits. Consult our list of approved host universities (to be available shortly) to determine what is considered a "full course load".
- If less than the equivalent of a full course load is completed, credits will be calculated as follows.
- The number of credits taken at the host university, divided by the number of credits for a full-year course load at the host university, multiplied by 30.
- Example: 10 units completed at University A 梅 14 units for a full-year course load at University A x 30: [10/14 x 30 = 21.4] = 21 成人大片 transfer credits.
- In Europe, most universities use the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to assign credit weight to courses. Credit ratio is 2 ECTS credits =1 成人大片 credit; so 60 ECTS credits = 30 成人大片 credits; 30 ECTS credits = 15 成人大片 credits.
- All transfer credits will be displayed on the Minerva transcript regardless of whether the courses have been successfully completed or have been approved towards your 成人大片 degree.
- The grades achieved at the host university will not appear on the 成人大片 transcript and will not be included in the 成人大片 CGPA; however, you are expected to maintain your 成人大片 academic standing at the host institution. If the host university grade average is not comparable to the final 成人大片 CGPA, the designations of Distinction or Dean's Honour List may be withdrawn at graduation.
- If your current academic standing is Unsatisfactory or Probationary, credits will only be transferred to your record once you return to Satisfactory standing.
- 听Courses at a host university which you fail or from which you withdraw will appear on your 成人大片 transcript with听zero credit granted.
