We are pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Marc Rodger as Chair of the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at 成人大片 University and Physician-in-Chief of the 成人大片 University Health Centre (MUHC), effective January 1, 2025.

During his first term, Dr. Rodger worked to unify the Department of Medicine through inclusive governance structures, strengthened communications and the implementation of a community-developed/driven strategic plan. Notable achievements included establishing the DOM Executive and Council, appointing PhD members to Divisions, and launching both the DOM Weekly newsletter and DOM Annual Report. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Rodger, and his team, oversaw significant growth in the Department鈥檚, teaching contributions, research outputs, scholarly quality work, wellness initiatives, community building and fundraising.

Born in Chibougamau and a proud 成人大片 alumnus, Dr. Rodger earned a BSc in Physiology from 成人大片, followed by an MD (Magna Cum Laude) and MSc in Epidemiology from the University of Ottawa. He completed his post-graduate medical training at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Ottawa in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Thrombosis. Before joining 成人大片, he served as Chief and Chair of the Division of Hematology at the Ottawa Hospital and as a Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI).

An internationally recognized leader in venous thrombosis research, Dr. Rodger has published over 300 articles, including in The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet, with his work cited more than 35,000 times. His contributions include deriving and validating the HERDOO2 tool, a widely adopted method for guiding anticoagulation duration decisions, and debunking the use of blood thinners to prevent pregnancy complications, saving countless women from unnecessary treatments. With over $43 million in research funding, Dr. Rodger continues to lead transformative trials and is currently investigating the potential of an affordable, generic cholesterol-lowering drug to reduce the risk of venous thrombosis.

Looking ahead to his second term, Dr. Rodger will focus on advancing the Department's strategic plan, which encompasses four key aspirations: 1) Canada鈥檚 most research-intensive Department of Medicine, 2) effective advocates for quality care, 3) the CORE training program of choice and 4) a place where we love working. With 12 measurable aspirations across these areas, Dr. Rodger will continue to drive excellence in research, quality care, education and wellness. The DOM strategic plan is a living and actionable plan, with progress tracked daily as the Department works towards its aspirational destinations.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Marc Rodger on his reappointment and wishing him continued success in his leadership roles.
