Urban Transport in India: My Journey to the Bottom of the Pyramid (And Other Diversions)

Madhav Badami has a joint appointment in the School of Urban Planning and the 成人大片 School of Environment. After having studied mechanical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, he spent nine years in diesel engine development in the Indian truck and bus industry, before going on to obtain a Master鈥檚 degree in environmental science at The University of Calgary, and a PhD in environmental policy at the University of British Columbia. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of environmental policy and planning; urban infrastructure and services in low-income countries; alternative transport fuels; sustainable urban transport; and environment and development.
He is the principal investigator of a SSHRC funded research program titled 鈥淎 Critical Assessment of Alternative Transport Fuels in a Rapidly Motorizing Low-income Country: The Case of Compressed Natural Gas in India鈥. Between 2003 and 2005, he was a co-investigator in a research project titled 鈥淯rban governance and environmental management: action-oriented policy studies on waste management in Jabalpur and Raipur鈥, funded by the Shastri-Indo Canadian Institute and CIDA. He has delivered several invited presentations, including to senior decision makers in India, at the COP-11 United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Montreal in 2005, and at the Asian Development Bank.
